Understanding Dementia and Resolving Common Challenges

Presented by Dr. Heather McKay, PhD, OT/L, Dementia Care Specialist

Many of the basic terms and principles of dementia care are not yet common knowledge. From the difference between Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia, to why people with dementia do what they do, many professional caregivers have not yet heard plain explanations. This class is what every care provider needs to know about the aging brain. The purpose of this program is to enhance participants’ understanding of brain changes associated with normal aging, Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia, and current non-pharmacological interventions. Dr. Heather McKay will focus on symptoms associated with different types of dementia, behaviors caused by these brain changes, and a positive way of beginning every interaction with people who have dementia.

Learning Objectives:

-Distinguish between normal forgetfulness and a memory/ thinking problem that does warrant alerting the doctor during one’s routine checkup.

-Identify symptoms associated with Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia.

-Recognize connections between common dementia-related challenges, potential root causes and effective solutions in real cases.

-Describe the purpose and key components of a dementia care technique known as Positive Physical Approach.
